Five things you need to know about a Product Carbon Footprint

Five things you need to know about a Product Carbon Footprint Five things you need to know about a Product Carbon Footprint describes the basic things that you need to start your own activities. 1. What is a Product Carbon Footprint? A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) measures the greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) related to a product or service. Depending on the type, a PCF can include the emissions resulting from…

SECR for Companies with Small Workforces

SECR Guidance for Companies with Small Workforces Companies with workforces below 250, can still be liable to report their emissions under SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting).  The Annual Turnover (£36m) and Balance Sheet (£18m) being the criteria that compels compliance.  Cloud based GHGi Analytics is designed to simplify SECR reporting for all sizes of organisation, but its simplicity is particularly useful for smaller ones.  Its simplicity makes it ideal…

The Different Colours of Hydrogen

The Different Colours of Hydrogen Hydrogen will be key in helping the UK reach net zero GHG emissions by 2050. What is meant by the different colours of hydrogen? Hydrogen is currently the only practical option for the decarbonisation of steel production, shipping and long-haul air travel. Hydrogen will be necessary for long distance transport of goods and passengers by road. All the major truck manufacturers are developing hydrogen powered…

5 Things I wish that I had known before I bought a Battery Electric Vehicle

5 Things I wish that I had known before I bought a Battery Electric Vehicle. We recently bought a Mercedes EQC, Battery Electric Vehicle as a family car.  It is a great car to drive, comfortable, quiet, well laid out, roomy and very quick.  That said, there is a lot I wish that I had known before buying the car.  We have had the car for a month now and…

A Carbon Tax is coming, why?

A Carbon Tax is coming, why? A carbon tax is coming and there can be little doubt that it is coming soon. Carbon will start to cost, and that will have a major financial impact on business.  Most organisations will be affected over the course of the next five years and must prepare to manage carbon pricing risks now. The UK has pledged to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by…

Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme – the UK’s first carbon tax?

Was the CRC the UK's first carbon tax? Between 2012 and 2019 the UK operated a “carbon tax”, the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC EES). It was a carbon emissions reduction scheme, applied to organisations that consumed more than 6,000 MWh of electricity through half hourly meters. The CRC EES applied to both public and private sectors. It was estimated that the scheme would reduce carbon emissions by…

Five reasons why global shipping is bad for the planet: yet it does not seem to care

A recent report in The Maritime Executive, describes the “World first zero emissions wind and hydrogen power cargo ship." Stories about low emission ships have been appearing for some time. A rather optimistic article on the Mongabay Website provides a potted history of the type. However, all this optimism could well be misplaced, given five reasons why global shipping is bad for the planet. The five reasons why global shipping…

Bottom Trawling is a climate change disaster.

A recent study published in the journal Nature, demonstrates some unpleasant facts about bottom trawling for fish.  Namely that it results in carbon emissions higher than that of pre-pandemic global aviation (around 2%).  Unlike aviation, bottom trawling could be eliminated completely.  All the more so because it is unprofitable without the current substantial government subsidies. Bottom Trawling is a climate change disaster and uneconomic. Why is Bottom Trawling a climate change…

Why Direct Air Capture might just work

Why Direct Air Capture might just work Direct Air Capture (DAC) is a method of removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.  The process works by passing atmospheric air through either a liquid, usually an aqueous alkaline solvent, or a solid sorbent filter (imagine a molecular sieve) that removes the CO2 whilst allowing the other chemicals to pass through the filter unaffected. The CO2 is then stored in underground reservoirs…
